Deaf Magician Story & Farewell to our Patrons…

Sunday 1st October 2017 at Pinner Green Social Club, Pinner.

It was a good turnout on Sunday 1st October 2017 where everyone got together for our Patron’s surprise farewell party. The event was a great success with a Deaf magician, sharing his journey about how he became deaf.

The event was a great success, starting with Michael Vincent, a Deaf magician, sharing his journey about how he became deaf. He found fame after appearing at the New Face show in 1987 where he wowed the audiences with his magic tricks. Tommy Cooper was the celebrity judge at the time, found Michael’s performance wonderful and entertaining and thought Michael got a very bright future.

Michael became deaf suddenly overnight and was devasted when he thought he had to give up his career as a Magician until he met some positive Deaf Role models including Asif Iqbal MBE, President of Harrow & Brent Deaf Club that he was inspired to reflect on his journey and start again. He learnt to communicate by lipreading and now wanting to learn sign language and continue with his magic show. He regained confidence and felt alive again!

Michael was presented with a certificate from our Patron John Purnell DL, GM QPM and his wife Margaret Purnell.

Asif came onto the stage with a hidden surprise for both Patrons by presenting them with an Award of Appreciation, thanking them for their support as our Patron for the last 5 years. They are retiring from their roles and will continue to support our club from time to time by visiting us.

Asif and the Patrons also presented small awards of appreciation to all committee members who stepped down from their role as committee members. Asif explained it was sad to see them leaving but pleased to see how confident our committee members have grown, after being involved in our Club over the years. We wish them all them all the best of luck.

Asif explained that we are looking for new committee members and encourage people to come forward with their interest to Asif or email him on hudc@hotmail.co.uk before our next event on 5th November 2017.

The event ended with Michael’s special Magic show, he wowed our audiences with his magic tricks and explained through our BSL interpreter how tricks worked. Everyone looked at him in awe and couldn’t believe their eyes. Even our Patron Margaret was called onto the stage to assist with a magic trick (a long thread of cotton were broken into pieces) and was gobsmacked when the broken cotton threads become one long thread, much to our amusement!

Date of our next event is Sunday 5th November 2017 at 2pm to 5pm.

Venue: Pinner Green Social Club, Rickmansworth Road, Pinner HA5 3TJ.

We look forward to seeing you there.
