Asif Iqbal MBE, President of Harrow United Deaf Club was stunned to receive an invitation for a Community Champion reception hosted by the Prime Minister, David Cameron, to mark the contribution they have made in their local community, presenting positive role models for other people to follow.
The Reception took place on Monday 19th January 2015 and the purpose of the reception was for the Prime Minister to thank people for their role in promoting community engagement and improving the quality of life in their area. Asif is seen as one of the Community Champion, in recognition of his hard work with the local communities including as a President of Harrow United Deaf Club and Ambassador of Harrow Art Centre.
Asif Iqbal MBE, President of Harrow United Deaf Club explained: “I was shocked when I received a letter of invitation from No.10, and I’m honoured to be recognised for my community work which I am passionate about. I hope to encourage and inspire local communities to give something back to the community. It could be something as simple as volunteering or as challenging as organising a variety of monthly events to educate and inspire others on various issues. It is so rewarding when you see your action made lots of difference in other people’s life, creating happier communities.”
Prime Minister David Cameron, welcomed Asif and the other Community Champions. David was pleased to hear all about Asif’s work in Harrow, his achievements and thanked him for all his hard work, making Harrow a vibrant place to live. It was due to Asif’s tremendous commitment to HUDC and the work they do, enabling both deaf and hearing people to work together, raising awareness on diversity issues, making the society a better place to live and work.
Conservative candidate Hannah David of Harrow West, who nominated Mr Iqbal for the visit, said: “It was my very great pleasure to introduce Harrow United Deaf Club’s very own Asif Iqbal to the Prime Minister as my nominee for this year’s Community Champions Reception.
“The event was an ideal opportunity for him to bring the Prime Minister up to date on all of the excellent work that he and the team at HUDC have been doing. I was thrilled to be able to play a part in bringing this meet about”.
