Much to Asif’s delight, he was invited to visit Coronation Street today (Tuesday 3rd May 2016), one of his favourite programme when he was young and he couldn’t believe that he was standing on the actual street of Coronation Street where millions of people tuned in every night. On arrival of Coronation Street studio, Asif was pleasantly surprised to see reception staff using BSL to greet me. She gave Asif a warm welcome and told him how much she heard about Asif, his work and his achievements to date. From there, Asif was greeted by a Corrie actress, also known as Carla Connor, she said Hi and struck up a warm conversation with Asif. He was then introduced to Kieran Roberts, Creative Director of Drama and a production manager who gave Asif a guided tour of Corrie including the most famous place – The Rover pub. Asif had a good walk around on the street and saw Roy’s Cafe, Hairdresser, Corner shop and many more. Asif was then taken to the studio to watch the rehearsal ready for the filming that took place at the Rover, with Maria Connor (Samia Ghadie), Aidan Conner (Shane Ward), Michelle Connor (Kim Marsh) and Steve McDonald were giving their lines. Asif then met the rest of the cast including Mike Le Vell who greeted Asif and explained that Mike gained deaf awareness as result of his deaf neighbours, stressing the importance of communicating clearly and ensure his lip-pattern are clear for deaf people to understand him and for Kevin to follow deaf people too. Asif was also introduced to another actress Izzy Armstrong, a level 2 BSL user and commented “it was really refreshing to be able to communicate with someone directly". Asif have also had Sean Tully who approached Asif with a warm hug to say hello before dashing off for filming.   On the subject of the Deaf Awareness Week, it was good to meet the cast and Asif managed to teach BSL to Kirean Roberts, Creative Director of Drama and Leanne Tilsley, an actress: “Welcome to Coronation Street" as an opportunity to raise deaf awareness. I was told that there will be a deaf character on the Corrie programme on Friday 6th May 2016. Asif Iqbal MBE summed up the day: " I was really impressed with the Coronation Street team for their dedication, encouraging positive portray of deaf people within the mainstream programmes. It was refreshing to see more opportunity for deaf people to be part of the team on/off screen. It is also crucial to raise awareness within the team about deafness including encouraging the production team to consider ways of raising deaf awareness and incorporate them into their programmes.  It was an excellent opportunity to meet the senior management, sharing information and ideas and I was honoured to be invited".
