Harrow Asian Deaf Club’ Special Reception at Harrow Council with Michael Lockwood, Chief Executive

After a successful day at Harrow Deaf Awareness Day, which took place at Harrow Council Civic Centre, Harrow Asian Deaf Club’s committee and volunteers were in a real treat, when they were greeted by CEO Michael Lockwood.

For many committee members and volunteers of HADC, they enjoys assisting with the event especially the first ever Harrow Deaf Awareness Day, where there were a huge turnout of public (both deaf and hearing people) and professionals working with deaf people attending the day, to learn more about services available locally. Clearly from the feedback that we received yesterday and today, the event has been hugely successful. Lots of people commented how they found the event very useful, informative and enjoyable with the following comments:

 “Marvellous”

“Fantastic”

“Brilliant event – meeting people and learning about what available, something I never knew of”

“Inspiring speakers especially the pupils of Hatch End School”

“I am proud to be there. Fantastic atmosphere!”

“Networking was fantastic – I learnt more from networking!”

“More events like that please!”

“Thought-provoking presentations from speakers on panel; I never thought like this before”

Most of all, they found it as their first ever opportunity to express their voice, to have their say about accessing to various services and as a result, felt empowered.

Some people attended were new faces and were attracted to learn more about what Deaf Awareness mean, having never experienced of working with a deaf person before. So they came away with new knowledge and understanding.

The event couldn’t have been achieved without the fantastic support of our committee members and volunteers – they demonstrated a high level of commitment, enthusiasm, and effective team work, supportive and made everyone felt so welcome and participate fully at the event.  As a result, they were invited to meet Michael Lockwood, CEO of Harrow Council who congratulated them on their hard work in making the event a great success before presenting them with a framed certificate.

Michael Lockwood, Chief Executive of Harrow Council, exclaimed: “The volunteers put a tremendous amount of work in which made this fantastic day even better.  A thank-you to them all”

Asif Iqbal MBE, President of HADC stated: “Harrow Asian Deaf Club has a fantastic year and the Harrow Deaf Awareness Day was like an icing on the cake! We have represented the voices of many deaf people who face barriers in their daily lives and accessing to services and the day offered us opportunity to bring everyone together under one roof and empowered many deaf people to have their say. I thank everyone for their tremendous support in making the day a great success. It was very heart-warming and rewarding to see the group getting recognition for their achievements that they deserved.”
