Job title: Connecting Communities Outreach Worker 

Hours – Flexible working/ location, Part-time at 21hours a week 

Term – 12month Fixed term contract 

Salary: £10 per hour 

Harrow and Brent United Deaf Club is delighted to receive funding from Harrow Giving for our new  project on Connecting Communities and is now recruiting for a new Outreach Worker to join our  Club.  

Core Role & Responsibility – what we expect from Outreach Worker: 

For the project, you will be expected to work with the local communities, Harrow Council, Harrow NHS  and Harrow Voluntary and Community Service to raise awareness of our deaf club, making links with  key partners, agencies, and D/deaf residents to ensure we reach D/deaf people requiring support where need. 

You will also be expected to be the main contact person to support/ outreach to the local community and facilitate access for members/ committee members to work closely with partners (health services)  as Deaf Healthy Lives Champions, to ensure accessibility for our deaf members including: 

  • Coordinate responses to enquiries e.g.: email, Facetime, WhatsApp, telephone calls, etc
  • Organise/ provide a series of Deaf Healthy Lives workshops at our monthly Deaf club  promoting the importance of safe physical, emotional and mental health, how to look after  yourself including being COVID safe, caring role for deaf carers, older people’s health, safe  health for young people, how to reduce social isolation – empower them with tools and useful  tips to support themselves and their peers.  
  • Liaise with service providers in Harrow area, to sign up for the Accessibility Audit/checklist and  to enable them to commit to the findings afterwards. 
  • Be creative including design and distribute posters and leaflets to send out to our local  communities, local deaf residents, and service providers to encourage participation in our deaf  club.
  • Be able to update information onto our website including healthy information content and blogs  with useful links for further information and support.
  • Act as a key person to work in partnership with Harrow Council, Harrow NHS, Community and  Voluntary Sector to share feedback from members about their experiences in accessing to  health and social care and ensuring the providers complies with the Equality Act, NHS  Accessible Information Standards and to co-produce better quality services with our members.  Therefore, the end outcomes would mean better health and well-being of our members,  eliminating frustration and barriers in accessing the much-needed support.
  • Support Monthly Deaf Club events.

Skills, experience and qualities you’ll need 

If you can match the skills, experience and qualities listed below, we’d love to hear from you: 

  • Educated to degree level or with equivalent experience 
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in the deaf community/ local community including  project management, community development, excellent networker and raising deaf  awareness. 
  • Knowledge of local community including deaf community, health and social care
  • Good organisational skills including being able to research information, be key contact  person and good recording of information.
  • Confident in presenting information in BSL and in report to the Committee Members Board
  • A great communicator, written and BSL, able to adapt your style as necessary
  • A strong customer service ethos
  • A creative mindset, able to anticipate and resolve problems
  • Clear Enhanced DBS Check is essential for this role. 

You will be expected to work flexibly either 21hours over 3 full days or spread over 5 days to suit the  demand of the project and supporting Harrow and Brent United Deaf Club events.
